2024 Convocation

Degree candidates, congratulations! You are on your way to receiving a degree from the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice.

Convocation and Hooding Details

Below is a list of Convocation and Hooding details with important information and requirements.

Regalia Deadline

Ph.D Students

  • Monday, April 15th

Master's Students

  • Friday, April 26th

Gowns and caps can be ordered online from the University Bookstore or in person at 970 East 58th Street.

Doctoral robes can be rented, but Master’s gowns must be purchased. The deadline to order regalia and have it shipped directly to candidates is Monday, April 15th, for Ph.D. students, and Friday, April 26th, for Master’s students.

For Master’s candidates who miss the deadline, regalia will still be available for purchase at the University Bookstore (2nd floor) beginning May 1, 2024,

** Master’s and doctoral students will receive their academic hood as a gift during the Hooding Ceremony, so do not purchase one.

Additionally, Crown’s SGA has led a graduation gown rental program in past years where students can rent a previously owned Master’s gown for a much lower cost. SGA will send more details regarding this resource.

On the day of the Hooding Ceremony (Friday), you will wear your gown as well as any other appropriate stoles, cords, or honors regalia. You cannot wear the cap because it gets in the way of being hooded. On the day of Convocation (Saturday), you wear everything--cap, gown, hood, and any other cords, stoles, or sashes you have received as honors.

Rockefeller Chapel

The Hooding Ceremony will occur on Friday, May 31, 2024, in Rockefeller Chapel at 9 am sharp. The ceremony will include remarks from Dean Gorman-Smith, Dean of Students Kristen Reid Salomon, and a special guest speaker (TBD). Then, each student will be called by name and hooded by a faculty member. Students must arrive by 8 am for check-in and line up on the day of the ceremony.

All graduating students from the 23-24 academic year (Autumn 2023,Winter 2024, Spring 2024, or Summer 2024) are eligible to participate in the ceremony and be hooded. It’s a truly joyous event that we hope you will attend!

Seating is limited in Rockefeller Chapel so each graduating student is encouraged to respect the limit of FIVE (5) guests. Additionally, while there is an encouraged guest limit, this is not a ticketed event. Lastly, the ceremony will be live streamed (and posted) to share with family and friends who cannot attend in person—we will share that link closer to the ceremony date!

Following the Hooding Ceremony on Friday morning, we hope you and your guests will join us for a celebratory Reception at Edith Abbott Hall between 11am and 1 pm.

We look forward to toasting all our Crown Family School graduates!
