2023 Convocation

Degree candidates, congratulations! You are on your way to receiving a degree from the Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice. Below is a list of updated information as of April 20, 2023.

2023 Crown Family School Hooding Ceremony

Friday, June 2, 2023

Rockefeller Chapel

9am-10:30am

The Hooding Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023 in Rockefeller Chapel at 9am sharp. The ceremony will include remarks from Dean Gorman-Smith, Dean of Students Kristen Reid Salomon, and a special guest speaker (TBD). Then each student will be called by name and hooded by a faculty member. Students will be required to arrive by 8am for check-in and line up on the day of the ceremony.

All students graduating in Spring 2023, Summer 2023, or who have graduated in previous quarters this academic year are eligible to participate in the ceremony and be hooded. It’s a truly joyous event and one that we hope you will attend!

Seating is limited in Rockefeller Chapel and so each graduating student is encouraged to respect the limit of FIVE (5) guests. Additionally, while there is an encouraged guest limit, this is not a ticketed event. Lastly, the ceremony will be live streamed (and posted) to share with family and friends who are not able to attend in person—we will share that link closer to the ceremony date!

Following the Hooding Ceremony on Friday morning, we hope you and your guests will join us for celebratory Reception back at Edith Abbott Hall between 11am and 1pm. We look forward to toasting all our Crown Family School graduates!”

Mandatory Hooding Rehearsal

To participate in the Hooding Ceremony, you are REQUIRED to attend the rehearsal on Tuesday, May 30 from 5pm - 6pm in Rockefeller Chapel. If you plan to participate in Hooding, please save the date!

Graduation Attire

Gowns and caps can be ordered online from the University Bookstore, in person at 970 East 58th Street, or by phone at 773.702.7712. Doctoral robes can be rented, but Master’s gowns need to be purchased. The deadline to order regalia and have it shipped to the University Bookstore is April 20, 2023. For Master’s candidates who miss the deadline, regalia will still be available for purchase at the University Bookstore (2nd floor) beginning May 23, 2023. ** Master’s and doctoral students will receive their academic hood as a gift during the Hooding Ceremony so do not purchase one.  Additionally, Crown’s SGA has led a graduation gown rental program in past years where students have had the option to rent a previously owned Master’s gown for a much lower cost. More details regarding this resource will be sent by SGA in the coming days.

On the day of the Hooding Ceremony (Friday), you will wear your gown as well as any other appropriate stoles, cords, or honors regalia. You cannot wear the cap because it gets in the way of being hooded. On the day of Convocation (Saturday), you wear everything--cap, gown, hood and any other cords, stoles or sashes you have received as honors.
