The Crown Family School offers Extended Evening (EEP) and Part-time Day programs to meet the educational needs of working adults. These programs enable students to complete the Master of Arts degree requirements by attending classes part-time during three years of continuous enrollment. Both programs require the same number of hours and credits in class and fieldwork as the Full-time Program in Social Work, Social Policy, and Social Administration.
Why a Master's Degree?
If you wish to become a Licensed Social Worker or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker you will need a master’s degree with a clinical concentration. If you wish to work in a management, policy or advocacy position in federal, state, county, and municipal government; nonprofit/forprofit organizations; public policy research and advocacy organizations; or community-based organizations, consider Crown Family School’s social administration concentration. You’ll develop competencies and the analytical and research skills needed to plan, implement, and evaluate programs and policies at various levels of intervention.
The Curriculum
EEP required courses are typically scheduled from 5:30 p.m. to 8:20 p.m., two evenings a week although some classes may also be available on Saturdays. Students take their required concentration courses in a specified sequence. EEP students are encouraged to arrange their work schedules so that they can take advantage of courses offered during the day at the Crown Family School and other units across the University. EEP students are also welcome to participate in any daytime programming (lectures, presentations, student groups, committees, social activities) as their schedules may allow
Students are encouraged to talk with their employers about the necessity of having some flexibility in their weekday schedules while in school. Students working in qualified agencies may be able to arrange one of the two field placements at their places of employment. The School will consider placing students in their agency of employment for first year Core or second year Concentration field placements provided certain safeguards can be established to insure that the educational quality of the experience is not compromised.
Increasing numbers of field placements require background checks, proof of immunizations, and/or drug testing prior to beginning work at the agency. The Field Education Office informs students of these requirements before beginning the practicum.
Students in the Part-time Day program take two courses each quarter over three years. Core courses are completed during the first year, except for the core practice course which is postponed until the second year along with the first field placement. Part-time Day students complete two field placements during their second and third year on the same academic schedule as Full-time students.
