The Crown Family School celebrates the progression of S Simmons to Associate Instructional Professor during the Spring 2024 quarter. Since joining the Crown Family School in 2018, Prof. Simmons has been an active and engaged University of Chicago community member.

Prof. Simmons teaches several foundational and elective courses that address some of our time's most challenging and pressing topics. As a creative and empathic instructor, he invests deeply in creating inclusive learning environments where students are encouraged to take risks and think in new ways. His dedication was recognized in 2021 when Simmons was awarded the William Pollak Award for Excellence in Teaching, a student-nominated honor that recognizes exemplary graduate teaching. Professor Simmons teaches various frameworks for understanding oppression and marginality. His courses develop skills in self-awareness, critical thinking, managing diversity, and group facilitation. These are essential for becoming effective social workers and agents of change.

In addition to his exemplary classroom teaching and exceptional mentoring, Prof. Simmons has been a leader in fostering Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity. He has actively participated on the IED committee as a chair and facilitator of training and workshops. Prof. Simmons is a vital member of the Crown Family School and the broader community at the University of Chicago. 

S has distinguished himself as an excellent instructor and exceptional mentor to students, and we are extremely fortunate to have his expertise as a member of the Crown Family School.
