By Crown Family School
Each year, the Crown Family School presents the Award for Excellence in Doctoral Student Mentoring to recognize and honor faculty members who have provided exemplary mentoring to the School’s doctoral students. It is a student-nominated award and recognizes one faculty member.
Assistant Professor Aaron Gottlieb is the 2024 winner for his contributions to students’ scholarly and professional development. “Dr. Gottlieb is not just a phenomenal mentor; he is the embodiment of the academic spirit I aspire to emulate – hardworking, deeply humane, passionate, and always eager to lift others as he climbs,” said one doctoral student nominator.
Professor Gottlieb joined the Crown Family School at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year, bringing an extensive and award-winning research background in social work & policy. Gottlieb exemplifies an unwavering dedication to teaching and mentoring as an active and involved community member within the University of Chicago and the broader city of Chicago.
“Dr. Gottlieb’s mentorship has been nothing short of transformative. He is not just supporting my academic pursuits; he’s all in, championing my goals, pushing me to think bigger, and reminding me to celebrate the small wins,” said one student nominator.
Gottlieb’s work applies quantitative methods to research in decarceration and other issues of criminal legal involvement and he has previously taught a Social Intervention: Programs and Policies course.
Crown Family School doctoral students gave Gottlieb glowing recommendations based on learning experiences in class and during their own research work.
“Dr. Gottlieb is the real deal: encouraging, insightful, and genuinely invested in your ideas, even when you doubt them yourself,” a student said.
