Janelle Goodwill Recognized for Excellence in Public Scholarship
Janelle R. Goodwill, PhD, Neubauer Family Assistant Professor at the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice, has been honored with the 2025 Early Career Communicator Award from the University’s Academic Communicators Network (ACN). The award recognizes faculty who demonstrate excellence in sharing their research with broader public audiences.
Goodwill’s research focuses on the mental health experiences of Black Americans, with particular attention to suicide prevention and mental health promotion. Her work has garnered national attention for addressing rising suicide rates among Black youth and expanding awareness of mental health disparities in underserved communities.

A trusted and compelling public scholar, Goodwill has appeared on PBS NewsHour, WTTW’s Chicago Tonight, and NPR, providing insight on the intersection of race, mental health, and community care. She has also authored op-eds in the Chicago Sun-Times, STAT, and The Conversation, translating academic research into accessible commentary on urgent public health challenges.
The ACN Excellence Awards are presented annually by the Office of the Provost and University Communications to recognize UChicago scholars who elevate public discourse through digital communication, media engagement, and thought leadership. Winners are selected by a committee of faculty and administrators from a competitive pool of nominees.
“Dr. Goodwill exemplifies what it means to lead impactful research that not only advances scholarship but also shapes public understanding and policy,” said Crown Family School Dean Deborah Gorman-Smith. “We are proud to see her work recognized at this level.”
Through her engaged scholarship, Goodwill continues to demonstrate the Crown Family School’s commitment to equity, justice, and public impact in the field of social work and beyond.
