Mindful Growth and Change: A Contextual Behavioral Approach to Motivational Interviewing
In-person only at the Crown Family School
12 CEUs
Contextual Behavioral Science (CBS) and Motivational Interviewing (MI) may differ in their philosophical and theoretical foundations, however, both of these approaches to human behavior are steeped in many similar therapist-specific behaviors such as acceptance, unconditional positive regard, accurate empathy, compassion, personal values and committed action. This workshop aims to examine how MI can be understood through the lens of Relational Frame Theory (RFT) and explore the similarities between MI and CBS approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP). Additionally, participants will gain insights into how MI can inform and strengthen the implementation of contextual behavioral approaches to treatment. Through role plays and experiential activities, participants will identify their own values, goals, and growth points in relation to acceptance, mindfulness, and value based living skills.
Learning Objectives:
1. Examine how Motivational Interviewing can be understood within the context of Relational Frame Theory
2. Explore how Motivational Interviewing (MI), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Functional Analytic Psychotherapy (FAP) overlap and enhance one another.
3. Help practitioners identify their own values, goals, and growth points in relation to acceptance, mindfulness, and value based living skills
4. Provide practitioners with concrete skills and resources to use with their clients related to behavior change and growth
