"Camp Widow" PBS Documentary Film Screening and Panel Discussion on Grief and Resilience
Please join the University of Chicago Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy, and Practice and our co-host, WTTW, for a special screening of "Camp Widow," a moving documentary that examines how resilience and community are built in the aftermath of widowhood and loss. The film offers an intimate look at Soaring Spirits International (SSI) and its Camp Widow program, which connects widowed people around the world, supports them in rebuilding their lives, and fosters lasting community after loss.
Following the screening, stay for a panel discussion about the innovative peer-based grief support programs created by Soaring Spirits and other organizations that serve widowed people.

Panel Moderator
Michele Neff Hernandez is an internationally recognized advocate for widowed people and the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Soaring Spirits International (SSI), a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing life-affirming, community-based support for widowed individuals worldwide. Through peer-driven, innovative programming, Michele has transformed the public conversation around widowhood — elevating the voices of widowed people to national and global stages.
She is the author of "Different After You: Rediscovering Yourself and Healing after Grief or Trauma" (New World Library), a compassionate guide that blends personal insight with practical tools for rebuilding after profound change. Michele’s pioneering work has earned her widespread recognition, including a letter of commendation from then–Vice President Joe Biden and selection as a Top Ten CNN Hero in 2021.
Under her leadership, SSI’s programs reach millions annually and have inspired the Camp Widow documentary, currently streaming via ITVS/PBS. Michele’s commitment to community healing through peer connection is also highlighted in the Rebel Hearts episode of the AppleTV+ series Gutsy.
She lives in Simi Valley, California, with an incredible family, including her children, the world’s most adorable grandson, and one very Australian husband.
Panelist
Amy Schiller, PhD, LCSW, is a licensed clinical social worker with deep expertise in psychotherapy and social work research. She earned her AB in Sociology from the University of Chicago and both her MSW and PhD from the University of Michigan, where she was a National Institute on Aging fellow.
Amy works with adults of all ages, using psychodynamic, relational, and mindfulness-based approaches to help clients explore how past experiences shape their present lives. She also integrates Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques when appropriate. Amy has conducted research and taught courses on health, wellness, aging, and end-of-life issues at the University of Chicago Crown Family School.
Panelist
Jim Spelman is an award-winning artist, coach, and photography-based image designer in the Chicago area. After the sudden death of his wife in 2002, he rebuilt his life through art and creative entrepreneurship. Jim now offers courses and coaching to empower others to rise above challenges and live fulfilling, creative lives.
As Presenter Liaison for Camp Widow, Jim supports event presenters and contributes as a speaker himself, sharing his perspective on resilience and reinvention. He lives in the Chicago area with his wife, Jeri, their two sons, and their cats, Chase and Farley.
