Becoming an Effective Supervisor

Becoming an Effective Supervisor: A workshop to assist new supervisors who are transitioning into a management role or who have limited experience as a supervisor.

Supervising and managing others is a complex practice which requires a specific set of skills and techniques that are different from direct service or other roles within the human and social service field. This includes motivating and inspiring others, holding staff accountable, assessing and giving feedback to direct reports as well as the development of an authentic leadership style based on an individual’s own unique values and experiences. For the new supervisor, the transition into managing others can be challenging. Feelings of uncertainty and the experience of “impostor syndrome” are common.

This workshop is intended for new and transitioning supervisors and will provide an overview of basic and critical managerial skills and their application at work and within the supervisory relationship. Discussions will include a variety of topics aimed at building confidence and supervisory strategies to engage staff and produce positive results. The workshop will be interactive with an opportunity to learn from materials provided as well as from other new and transitioning supervisors. Facilitator Curt Holderfield, LCSW, will bring into the workshop his

many years of experience managing and leading others as well as his teaching on matters related to supervision
