Course Description

In this course, teams of 3-5 students will get an experiential learning opportunity, working on projects with local social sector organizations that needs help making a strategic decision and plan accordingly. (Client organizations and topics TBD.) Each team will work on its project throughout the quarter with the guidance from the instructor and the client, and teams will present an actionable recommendation to the client in the final class. Key learning objectives and skill development:
1) Identify key questions and conduct analysis to inform strategic decisions
2) Design a “right-sized” scope of work and project plan
3) Practie positive, shared-power relationship skills with the “client”
4) Cultivate effective team dynamics

This course and project will involve problem-solving, making strategic decisions, and planning for the future – which are essential responsibilities for all social sector leaders, volunteers, and consultant - as organizations are faced with countless big decisions in striving to maximize their impact. The course will include a lecture-based component introducing tools and frameworks, approaches, and case studies relevant to the projects. In addition, students learn how to engage in effective teamwork and dynamics, an essential skill for social sector leadership.
