Disability Activism in China

THIS IS AN IN-PERSON EVENT AND WILL NOT BE LIVE STREAMING.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

China ratified the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2008. In the following decade, as nascent disability activism flourished with the growth of disabled people organizations (DPOs), the wider civil society embraced agendas to promote disability rights, and the government spearheaded efforts to improve disability welfare. However, civil society in China has encountered increased restrictions over the past few years; the COVID-19 pandemic and the intensifying geopolitical situations have also brought this young movement significant challenges.

This one-day conference will promote dialogue and exchange on the current status of disability rights and activism in China, its achievements and strategies for moving forward amongst a group of cordially invited, profoundly experienced scholars, experts, NGO leaders, and self-advocates.
