Center for Climate, Health, and Society
Advancing health equity in climate-vulnerable urban communities
Mission
The Center for Climate, Health, and Society (CHAS) advances health equity in frontline and climate-vulnerable urban communities disproportionately affected by climate change. We conduct rigorous interdisciplinary research, train future climate–health leaders, and work in close partnership with local communities to co-create climate solutions rooted in justice, resilience, and inclusive development.
We envision a future in which every community, regardless of income, geography, or social position, can thrive in a changing climate. Our vision is a world with equitable access to clean air, safe housing, resilient infrastructure, and high-quality health systems, supported by civic and scientific institutions that center community expertise and lead with justice.
Equity & Justice - We confront structural inequities in climate policy and practice, partnering with communities experiencing the greatest climate-related health burdens.
Community Partnership - We work with communities to co-design solutions that honor lived experience and strengthen local power.
Rigorous Inquiry - We are committed to evidence-based research that advances scientific understanding and drives real-world change.
Interdisciplinarity - We integrate insights across climate science, public health, social work, policy, medicine, planning, and community organizing.
Transparency & Accountability - We cultivate trust through open collaboration, shared learning, and clear communication of commitments and outcomes.
Leadership Development- We invest in cultivating the next generation of climate–health leaders who reflect and advocate for the communities most affected by climate-driven health risks.
CHAS examines how climate change shapes health systems and inequities and translates evidence into policy solutions at the local, city, and national levels.
CHAS prepares the next generation of climate-health leaders through workforce development, fellowships, and practitioner pathways in partnership with the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy.
CHAS collaborates with South and West Side Chicago communities to co-design neighborhood resilience strategies, advance trauma-informed care, and support youth leadership.
