This course is an overview of crisis intervention theories and interventions. An emphasis on delivering these approaches with someone who is experiencing an acute crisis will be explored throughout the course. Psychological first aid will be discussed in detail and its application across different settings. Another focus of the course is on secondary traumatic stress, vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue for helping professionals. Overall, this course is designed to help students develop an understanding of crisis intervention theories and practical skills. This course is intended for direct practice social work students who will inevitably be confronted with someone in crisis within their service setting. Coursework will be centered on weekly readings, class discussion, partnered role-playing and small group work.
